YWIE

Tonight I'm so glad that I'm a part of the Young Women's organization in our ward.

We had our Young Women in Excellence program tonight and it was beautiful. Each girl was able to display something she had been working on during the past year.

Katelyn's contribution was to make licorice caramels to share. These came from a recipe that has been handed down for at least four generations. To finish off her display, she had a beautiful picture of her Great-grandma Crowther and a four generation pic with Great-grandma Crowther, Grandma Youngs, me, and Katelyn as a baby. I thought it was pretty cool.

So that you might all enjoy this special treat, here is the recipe for Licorice Caramels. To make plain caramels, simply omit the anise flavoring and the black paste coloring.

Licorice Caramels
2 c. sugar
1 can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 c. Karo (light or dark)
1/2 lb. butter
1/4 t. salt

Combine all ingredients in heavy saucepan and cook over med-high heat until 234 degrees, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add 1 1/2 t. anise flavoring and 3/4 t. black paste food coloring (Wilton's).

Pour ito 11x7 pan lined with Saran Wrap. Cool. Cut into pieces and wrap with wax paper.

Enjoy!
